HbA1C

Glycol-HbA1C is produced by non enzymatic condensation of glucose with the β-globin chain of adult hemoglobin. Its normal value is 4-6% of total hemoglobin.
Rate of glycol-HbA1C formation is proportional to the ambient blood glucose concentration. 1% rise of plasma glycol-HbA1c concentration corresponds to an average increase of blood glucose concentration by 2 mmmol/L.
It stands for an accurate and objective measure of the ambient blood glucose concentration over a period of 8-12 weeks. So it is advised to be done at 3 months interval.
It has more prognostic value than diagnostic value. HbA1c<6% indicates good glycemic control over the last 3 months, but >9% indicates poor control.
