Balanced Diet



Def: It is a diet prepared incorporating all the proximate of food including essential nutrients in a proportion necessary to meet the body requirement of a definite individual with respect of age sex occupation and life style.
Factors needed to be considered in balanced diet:
1.      Age, sex, physical activity
2.      Availability of food.
3.      Social and cultural habit.
4.      Economic status
5.      Nutritional status eg. Pregnancy,lactation
6.      Inclusion of fibers
Planning of balanced diet:
1.      Energy calculation
a.      Basic energy needs (BMR + Physical activity)
b.      Recommended energy needs (Basic energy needs + 10% for SDA)
2.      Distribution of energy to different food
a.      60% ascribed to Carbohydrate
b.      30% ascribed to Fat
c.       10% ascribed to Protein
3.      Selection of food according to the availability and economic status
4.      Inclusion of fibers and adequate fruits and vegetables.
